MARQUETTE YOUTH VOLUME & CJ REDFEARN
present a Spring Recital of Classical Solos & Collaborative Composition
/////
On the morning of June 8th at 11a, the violin and cello students of Marquette Youth Volume (MYV) will present a Spring Recital on the back deck of Still Point North Center.
Ten young violinists ages 4-15 will perform classical solos from the world-renowned Suzuki repertoire Volume 1 to open the show. MYV students have been attending weekly private lessons since September and meeting as a group twice a month. The Suzuki method is just one facet of Youth Volume's teaching approach.
MYV will then improvise three group compositions LIVE. MYV’s 2024 Guest Artist CJ Redfearn will contribute beats. Clara Hardie, MYV’s Director and violin/cello teacher will join in alongside her students.
Redfearn is a producer, beatmaker, and DJ who grew up in Gwinn. He is a musical changemaker who has also collaborated with Stina J and youth from the Great Lakes Recovery Center in Negaunee.
A local musician like CJ will collaborate with YV students each spring to celebrate Marquette's music culture. During our annual Place-based Music Celebrations, teaching artists facilitate non-classical genre workshops and write NEW music alongside their younger collaborators. During this process, students develop positive cultural identities as residents of their cities and as citizens of the world! Check out Detroit Youth Volume's five Albums that celebrate hip hop, jazz, electronic music, singer-song writing, and folk.
This year’s compositions will be recorded live on 6/8 and released as Marquette Youth Volume’s first album in July on Bandcamp and YouTube.
A potluck brunch & open house will follow the performance. Rain or shine!
Funding for this project was made in part by individual donors, and by Zonta Marquette, empowering women and girls.
